There are many motifs in the Great Gatsby, one of them is money. Money is seen all throughout the book. It comes up often because the book is based around the lives of some very wealthy people. Therefore bringing up scenes where money is used or spoken about. Money comes up in the book from the beginning all the way to the end. I have picked some quotes showing examples of the money.

"We had over twelve hundred dollars when we started, but we got gypped out of it all in two days in the private rooms."

This quote is Catherine speaking to Nick. They were talking about Myrtle and Tom getting married. Tom said they should get married in europe to be discreet then Catherine began to talk about europe. Catherine said she spent over twelve hundred dollars(which is worth about 14k now). She used the word "gypped" which means receiving less than she paid for. But the fact that she paid what is worth fourteen thousand now shows how much money Catherine had.

"My family died and I came into a good deal of money"

This quote comes from Gatsby to Nick. This conversation is Gatsby lying to Nick about why he is wealthy. Gatsby gives out hints to his lying when he thinks middle west is San Francisco. Since he said he studied at oxford he should know that. Also when he said he was educated at oxford it came out weird like he didn't mean it. Later in the book we find out he was bootlegging to earn money.

"Her voice is full of money,"

This is also Gatsby speaking. Here him and Nick are waiting for Daisy to come out. Nick was about to say that about Daisy but Gatsby finished his sentence. What Gatsby meant about her having a mouth full of money is that she speaks just as a wealthy person would. They are saying she has a stereotypical rich girl voice. This is because she has always been rich, and she only gets with wealthy men because she wants to continue being rich.

                                                                   Conclusion
These quotes are just some of the many times money appeared as a motif. Money was a very recurring subject in The Great Gatsby, whether it was Nick, Gatsby, Tom, or Daisy they all were involved with it. Money had different roles throughout the book, but most of the time it was to prove a point.
